What is a Dachshund?

The Dachshund breed, with its roots deep in German culture and history, has remained a cherished dog breed worldwide for over 3 centuries. Due to its elongated body, this breed is humorously and affectionately known as the sausage dog or wiener dog.

Beginning during the Middle Ages, Dachshunds were developed to be excellent diggers and ardent hunters of small animals such as badgers or rabbits. In fact, their own German name, Dachshund, translates directly to “badger dog” in English.

The Dachshund’s short, narrow body should not be underestimated. For centuries, this breed has proven that they are courageous hunters and loyal, good-humored little companions.

Appearance

The Dachshund possesses a “sausage-like” appearance, which it is famous for. These dogs have a long body, a skinny tail, and they stand low to the ground. Though their legs give them a stubby appearance, this breed is muscular and lean.

Given their hound dog lineage, this breed possesses dangling furry ears, a long muzzle, and eyes that are deep brown in color. This breed maintain an endearing yet lively expression across their face that is beloved by dog lovers.

Dachshund Size

The elongated length full grown Dachshunds possess is one of their most appealing characteristics to potential owners. What most people do not realize is that there are 2 types of this breed, the standard Dachshund and the miniature Dachshund.

In regards to their weight, Doxies that are regularly sized can be between 16 and 32 pounds. Those that are miniature are about 11 pounds or less.

Contrarily, they are quite small in height. Standard Dachshunds can be about 9 inches tall, while their miniature counterparts only can be 6 inches tall. In comparison to their hound dog relatives, this breed is very small.

How Do You Pronounce Dachshund?

Because their name has linguistic roots in Germany, not many people know how to properly pronounce their name. The Americanized way to pronounce their name is dahks-hund. However, natives of Germany pronounce it as DAHKS-huunt.  Both ways are seen as acceptable in the canine world.

What Dogs Made a Dachshund?

Many may marvel at where this tiny yet mighty warrior of a dog got their hunting, tracking, and guarding instincts. This hound dog descended from a few notable breeds that possessed these qualities.

Terriers, cocker spaniels, and the German Schweisshund are all breeds that have produced the Dachshund, one way or another.

What are the Different Types of Dachshunds?

Because this breed is mixed with other dog breeds, 3 distinct types of Dachshunds have been produced. These Doxie breeds are differentiated based on the type of fur they possess.

  • Wire haired

This type has a short, wiry coat that is most popular in Germany. This coat in particular can be tricky to groom.

  • Smooth haired

Dachshunds with of this type have coats that are smooth, shiny, and short. The smooth haired coat is easiest to groom and keep clean.

  • Long haired

This type of the breed boasts of long, luscious hair. The only downside to this type of coat is that it can get tangled and knotted quite easily.

Dachshund Coat Colors

Dachshunds can come in a wide spectrum of colors and pattern variations.

  • Most commonly, this breed is usually black, tan, and red.
  • Less commonly, this breed can be seen in colors like wild boar, lavender, cream, chocolate, and blue. Most Dachshunds are a combination of these colors.

This breed can also have coat patterns such as:

  • Piebald
  • Brindle
  • Sable
  • Dapple

Dachshund Personality Type

This adorable breed are known for their spirited, funny temperament. They can make fantastic family dogs due to their playful and friendly nature.

The petite size also called a mini doxie should not be taken to represent their personality. On the contrary, this breed has a big and bold personality.

Because of their history as avid hunters, this breed of dog enjoys working independently. When they are engaged in tracking or chasing after small animals, Dachshunds are serious and determined. This breed also possesses a loud bark which, coupled with its innate instincts, make them effective watch dogs.

Because of their trait of loyalty, Doxie dogs tend to become quite attached to their family members. For this reason, they should not be left unattended for too long. This can give way to destructive behavior such as constant howling and digging. This is especially true for Doxie puppies.

Wiener dogs are often bred with various other dog breeds to create mixed breeds. As it is with any mixed breed, time should be taken by potential buyer to look into what a specific mixed breed is like in terms of temperament, health, and other needs.

Caring for the Dachshund Breed

Do Dachshunds Shed?

Overall, the Dachshund breed sheds moderately. However, this can vary slightly depending on the type of coat the dog has.

  • Long-haired type will need to be brushed several times of week due to their propensity for tangled, matted hair.
  • On the other hand, smooth-haired doxies need little to no brushing. A quick wipe-down with a cloth or glove is sufficient.
  • Wire-haired need to be kept trim and tidy.

Exercise and Training

Dachshunds are athletic dogs and require ample amounts of exercise per day. This breed enjoys running, chasing, and jumping, so physical activities outdoors are highly recommended.

As far as training goes, this little dog can be a challenge. Doxies are independent and often get caught up in their own adventures. This makes it hard to keep their attention on the training task at hand. Patient, diligent training methods should be utilized by the trainer for the best results.

Diet

Dachshunds are known sniff out food at every chance. It is important to keep treats and extra meals to a minimum. This breed tends to suffer from a bad back, so obesity can be substantially more harmful to the dog and its back.

Dachshund Health Issues

This breed can be kept healthy and vivacious for many years if their health is made a priority. The average life expectancy is between 12 and 16 years.

Because they are prone to back issues, the Wiener dog should be exercising daily and kept at a healthy weight. This is one of the most important steps in caring for this breed.
